Mid Century Modern Architectural Tours
|
This week’s podcast brings you to the rarified world of Cranbrook School, a private school in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. It is set on 122 manicured acres with sculptures rivaling Europe’s most outstanding gardens. Yet, its soul is strictly Mid Century Modern. Check out my living room and note the tulip chairs. I bet you recognize the design.
And there is an intriguing back story. Cranbrook School was built in the golden age of enterprise by the Booths, who commissioned many renowned Modernist buildings. The home of Eliel Saarinen is now one of the many campus museums you can visit. Cranbrook School offers tours, lectures, and events.
Famous fabric purveyor Florence Knoll was an orphan taken in at Cranbrook School at age 10. She founded a textile empire.
Did you know of the rivalry between Saarinen and Frank Lloyd Wright? Or the women behind Midcentury Modernism who were not allowed to practice architecture, so they invented “marketecture,” designing the furniture that influenced the tables and chairs you use today.
To cap off your Modernist journey, listen to my interview with Natasha Drabbe the Founder of Iconic Houses Network as she takes you on a bucket list journey around the world to visit homes built by architects for themselves.
