Tune in for an enlightening conversation that challenges conventional thinking.
As you know, I have been studying where I might want to buy a home in Europe. Husband is against it, so we shall see. But I have landed on a surprising area because I feel there are health benefits. I want to share the area and explain my criteria.
Brittany in northwestern France boasts cobblestone villages, fresh-food markets, music, street life, and access to the U.K. via ferries and to the rest of Europe by train. A TRAIN TO Paris takes two hours, Rennes airport 50 minutes by car, with direct flights to Italy, Spain, and the U.K., among other destinations. The villages are walkable, and the temperature is cool in the summer when I want to be there.
Cultural sights I visited in 2024 on a road trip from Toulouse to the Ferry to the UK
Start in Saint-Malo, the historic walled port city where you can walk the ramparts overlooking the English Channel. The old town streets, rebuilt after World War II, are full of cafés and maritime history.
Travel west to Mont-Saint-Michel, the extraordinary abbey rising from the sea. Technically just across the Normandy border, it is one of France’s most visited cultural landmarks and an unforgettable medieval pilgrimage site.
Continue to Dinan, one of Brittany’s most beautiful preserved towns, with half-timbered houses, stone streets, and a dramatic medieval castle overlooking the Rance River.
In Rennes, Brittany’s capital, explore the Parlement de Bretagne building, art museums, and one of the best Saturday markets in France at Marché des Lices.
Visit Carnac, famous for its mysterious prehistoric stone alignments. Thousands of standing stones stretch across fields, older than Stonehenge, and still not fully explained.
Head to the Pink Granite Coast near Perros-Guirec, where enormous rose-colored rock formations create surreal coastal landscapes perfect for walking trails and seaside villages.
Finally, explore Quimper, the cultural heart of Breton traditions, with a Gothic cathedral, pottery workshops, and traditional Breton music and festivals.
Britany for health: My Checklist for longer-term renting or buying:
Does the temperature jive with what feels good to me?
Can I learn the language so I have friends?
Are the people of the community open to recruits?
Is the food fresh and available to buy daily?
Is the area walkable?
Is it near other areas I want to visit?
What are the cultural and culinary experiences like?
Are there other expats? Even though I will be using only short stays, it is great to have locals from the U.S. and the U.K.
Can I afford it?
Does Stuart like it?… But that’s my problem.
Luxury Travel for Less
One HUGE travel trend is wellness travel, with new facilities that are blending cutting-edge medical science with ancient healing traditions.
This shift signifies a move toward holistic healthcare that prioritizes both technological innovation and deep environmental harmony. I travelled to Bangkok for my health tests, and one test saved me from an incorrect diagnosis of kidney disease. Wow. I also love the healing and relaxation rituals. BUT… It’s expensive
Thank heaven for competition, prices are getting lower, and I make wellness travel part of my healthcare budget. For example, Sec-He in Palm Springs, run by the Agua Caliente Cultural Center features mineral springs, a salt room for better breathing, meditation lounges, zero gravity, a world-class gym, and extra for cryonics… freezing exposure, and no extra for cold plunges, steam, sauna, and much more.
Six Senses London at The Whiteley (United Kingdom): This is the brand’s first outpost in the U.K. and will feature a dedicated longevity-focused medical clinic
Clinique La Prairie (Amaala, Saudi Arabia, and Phuket, Thailand): Known for its focus on living longer and healthier,
Mailena Wellness Resort (Mexico): Located on the Baja California shoreline, this resort will house a state-of-the-art Wellness and Longevity Center.
Tulåh Clinical Wellness Sanctuary (India): Situated in Kerala, this sanctuary represents a shift toward Western science and integrated holistic healthcare.
Ameyalli Wellbeing Center (Utah, USA): Opening in 2027, this center, led by Deepak Chopra, will pair the “latest tech” with spiritual practices like quantum healing and manifestation workshops,
Phoenix Hotel (Malta): The centrepiece of a wellness journey that looks to the future and honours the past.
