In the heart of Lucca lies Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, a bustling square shaped by its ancient Roman amphitheater. Here, vibrant cafes spill onto the cobblestones, inviting me to savor my first taste of Tuscan cuisine amidst lively chatter and laughter.
Culture Vulturing: Churches and Museums
Lucca boasts an impressive array of churches and museums, each offering a glimpse into its storied past. The Cathedral of San Martino's intricate façade and soaring bell tower stood as a testament to the city's medieval splendor. Inside, you will see masterpieces by Tintoretto and Ghirlandaio, transported to a time when art and faith intertwine seamlessly.

For history enthusiasts, the Palazzo Pfanner provided a window into Lucca's aristocratic legacy. Its Baroque gardens, adorned with statues and citrus trees, offered a serene escape from the bustling streets.
Mangia! Culinary Delights
No visit to Lucca is complete without indulging in its culinary treasures. The city promises a feast for every palate, from family-run trattorias to Michelin-star restaurants. At Buca di Sant'Antonio, renowned for its traditional Lucchese dishes, I savored delicate Tortelli Lucchesi and tender braised rabbit paired with a robust Chianti Classico.
For a taste of Lucca's artisanal delights, explore the bustling market at Piazza del Carmine, where vendors offer fresh produce, pecorino cheese, and golden olive oils that capture the essence of Tuscany in every drop.
Festivals and A Touch Of Pinocchio
Throughout the year, Lucca comes alive with festivals celebrating its cultural heritage. In September, the Lucca Comics & Games Festival transforms the city into a playground for comic book enthusiasts and traditional games, blending modern pop culture with centuries-old traditions.
Nearby, Collodi beckons me every time I travel to Tuscany. Collodi is known as the birthplace of Pinocchio. A scenic drive or a leisurely bike ride from Lucca, Collodi offers a glimpse into the fairy tale world that inspired Carlo Collodi's beloved story. You can explore the Pinocchio Park and Villa Garzoni Gardens, immersing yourself in the whimsical landscapes that inspired one of literature's most enduring tales.
One of my all-time favorite souvenirs is the wooden Pinocchio puppets in all the toy shops in Collodi. The toy shops are a grandparents' dream. But Beware… the original Pinocchio by Collodi is a dark tale, no Disney here/ The cricket is a bug—no top hat. So, please read the book before you give it to the children!
