JourneyWoman's Solo Travel

I  was honored to be Awarded the JourneyWoman Solo Travel Wisdom Award for my essay on how solo travel is an oxymoron. Traveling alone or in a group of solo enhances friendships and opens the door to new relationships.

The history of JourneyWoman, the leading directory and information hub for solo trips, proves this.

Traveling solo can be a life-changing experience, especially for women. In our latest podcast episode, I  had the pleasure of speaking with Carolyn Ray, the CEO of JourneyWoman, a platform dedicated to empowering women travelers around the globe. Carolyn shares the inspiring history of JourneyWoman, founded by Evelyn Hannon in 1994. Originally a printed newsletter, it has evolved into a thriving online community connecting women with a passion for travel.

This sense of community is vital to the JourneyWoman experience, as it allows women to connect with like-minded individuals who understand their journeys.

JourneyWoman has compiled a robust directory of travel offers, including volunteer opportunities and curated travel experiences specifically designed for solo women. She highlights the importance of purposeful travel, which enriches the traveler's experience and contributes positively to the communities they visit.

Listen Up Travel Industry: The Demographics are A'Changin!

With more women living longer and healthier lives, solo travel is becoming increasingly popular among older women, who are eager to explore the world on their terms. This shift in perspective is essential, as it challenges traditional notions of aging and travel, allowing women to embrace their independence and adventure.

Carolyn shares insights from a recent survey of 1600 women that reveals women travelers' purchasing and decision-making power. Yet only 5% of travel advertising is geared to us. This data highlights the need for the travel industry to cater to this demographic, ensuring that women feel supported and empowered in their travel choices.

Widows, Caregivers, and Mature Adventurers Are All Candidates for Solo Travel

Every woman leads many lives. Like Adriane's Mom, she may be a widow coping with grief, like Adriane, a mature woman who seeks adventures usually open only to younger women, or a family caregiver with limited time to spare on herself, or all three. Adriane and Carolyn discuss the importance of travel as a healthcare essential, not an indulgent luxury. They have made the world their second home. You can, too, with the help and inspiration of the JourneyWoman articles and events.
