I'm heading back to Johannesburg. I spent a few hours there years ago, just passing through to Victoria Falls. I mostly saw Caesars Palace Casino near the airport. This time, I'm diving deep into the city's vibrant culture.
I'm meeting with Lorraine Keenan, founder of Hero Holidays, and a guest on my podcast, The Ageless Traveler. With Lorraine's insights and the expertise of local guides, I'm set to uncover the city's hidden gems and nearby sights.
Here is a quick checklist I made for myself:
- Urban Centers
Start my journey in the heart of Johannesburg:
- Maboneng Precinct: A revitalized area teeming with art galleries, boutiques, and cafes.
- Apartheid Museum: Gain a profound understanding of South Africa's history.
- Soweto Township: Visit the homes of Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu
Accommodation: I’ll stay at the Hallmark House Hotel in Maboneng, known for its artistic flair and panoramic city views.
Glorious Food and Culinary Delights
Johannesburg's food scene is a melting pot of flavors:
- The Marabi Club: A jazz bar offering contemporary dishes in a speakeasy setting.
- Glory: An intimate, plant-based restaurant that challenges traditional dining norms.
- The Library Food Club is a hidden gem behind an unmarked bookcase that offers themed dining experiences. (I love speakeasys).
About our Guest Lorraine Keenan:
Lorraine Keenan is the founder of Hero Holidays Volunteer Programs Pty Ltd, based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, Lorraine celebrates her Irish heritage and has served as the past chairperson of the Irish South African Association. For the past 50 years, she has been living and working in Johannesburg, establishing herself as a serial entrepreneur and now a social entrepreneur in the tourism industry.
Culture Vulturing
Immerse myself in Johannesburg's rich artistic heritage:
- Nando's Art Collection: Visit one of the world's largest private collections of South African art integrated into Nando's restaurants.
- September Events: If the timing is right, I won't miss the Soweto Pride, which celebrates LGBTQIA+ communities with vibrant parades and events. I'll send pictures back to my friends in Palm Springs.
Safari Adventure
I'll enjoy the wild side of South Africa with day trips:
- Pilanesberg Game Reserve: Just a 3-hour drive from Johannesburg, this malaria-free reserve offers Big Five sightings and hot-air balloon rides.
- Dinokeng Game Reserve: Only an hour away, it's the only reserve in Gauteng with free-roaming Big Five animals.
- Mabula Game Reserve: Located 2.5 hours from the city, enjoy game drives, stargazing, and quad biking. (I won’t bike…but other people love this.)
Finale
Local Markets: Pick up souvenirs and local crafts to remember my adventure.
Car Rentals: My husband, Stu, will be driving. At the O.R. Tambo International Airport, we will rent a car from reputable agencies like Avis or Europcar.
Final Thoughts
Johannesburg is a city of contrasts and creativity. From its rich history to its dynamic art scene and culinary innovations, there's something for every traveler. With the guidance of locals like Lorraine and the city's welcoming spirit, my quick trip will be memorable, and I'll report to you firsthand.
