Dear Ageless Traveler,

River cruising may be the perfect way for those of us over 60 to see the world. Your ship docks right in the heart of town, steps from the cathedral, the market, or the museum. And on board, the scenery comes to you while you sip coffee on deck.

This week’s Travel Tuesday is about matching the river to your mobility, whether you hike ten miles, walk with a cane, or travel with a wheelchair. Ask the right questions, and there is a river trip that fits you.

There is something else I want you to think about. A river cruise is only as good as the river it sails on. I’m often asked, “Why did our itinerary change?” More and more, the answer is the water itself.

So, this week, our usual sections focus on river cruising for everybody. We cover:

  • Ask Adriane: Can I River Cruise with a Cane, a Walker, or a Wheelchair?
  • News You Can Use: Low Water, High Water, and What River Health Means for Your Itinerary
  • Culture Vulture: The Most Accessible River Cruises, and the Top River Cruises for Art Lovers
  • Luxury Travel for Less: Operetta River Cruises with Theatrical Adventures, Barging Through Europe with European Waterways, the Galápagos with Go Galápagos, Plus an Exclusive 5% Off Ramble Worldwide Walks and Cruises

This week on The Ageless Traveler podcast, I welcome Kirk Barrett of the Rahway River Watershed Association, one of the grassroots groups keeping America’s rivers fresh and flowing. We talk about why the health of one small New Jersey river connects to every river we cruise, and how travelers can help.

Never stop traveling

Cheers,

Adriane

This Week’s Highlights

On This Week’s Podcast

Keeping Our Rivers Fresh and Flowing with Guest: Kirk Barrett, Rahway River Watershed Association

Kirk Barrett, President of the Rahway River Watershed Association, joins me to talk about something most of us never consider when we book a river cruise: the river itself.

You’ll learn how local watershed groups, from New Jersey to the Danube, protect our rivers, and simple ways you can give back, including volunteering close to home.

Culture Vulturing Around the World

Sail with Art Historians: AmaWaterways and Smithsonian Journeys
These co-branded European river cruises bring Smithsonian experts, including art historians, aboard sailings on the Seine, Rhône, Rhine, Danube, and Douro, with small-group excursions led by specialists.

Art Underground: Bassins des Lumières, Bordeaux
A World War II submarine base transformed into an immersive digital art exhibition. It’s an optional excursion on the Theatrical Adventures Bordeaux cruise you read about above.

Luxury Travel for

Ramble Worldwide

You unpack once, walk with a Ramble leader in a small group, and skip any walk you like. New slower-paced Adagio sailings offer shorter walks and more sightseeing in Scotland, the Canary Islands, and Morocco. Prices start at £1,599 for a five-night Scottish Islands sailing in August 2027. Ageless Travelers get 5% off all of their trips. Just tell them Adriane Berg sent you.
Barging Through Europe: European Waterways
For an intimate trip, try a luxury hotel barge. European Waterways sails small barges, many with just four to six cabins, along Europe’s historic canals and quiet rivers, including those in the UK. I sailed with them in Burgundy last August and in Champagne this August aboard the Kir Royale. Hear all about my trip on the podcast episode “Champagne, France by Luxury Barge: The Slow Travel Adventure That Taught Me to Relax,” on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

Island Hopping in the Galápagos: Go Galápagos
For a very different water adventure, Go Galápagos (by Kleintours) has ships leaving almost daily for the islands, so it’s easy to fit a cruise into your Ecuador trip. Stuart and I went this August to celebrate our 55th wedding anniversary, among fearless sea lions, giant tortoises, and blue-footed boobies. Hear all about it, plus Quito and the Amazon, on the podcast episode “Ecuador Travel: Quito, Galápagos & the Amazon Rainforest,” on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
