Dear Ageless Traveler,

This Post-Valentine’s Day, I’m celebrating one of the great loves of my life: Europe.

My affair began in 1959 when a flight to Israel — where my mother sent me to camp after my father died — made unexpected refueling stops in France and Holland. Instead of a quick layover, we stayed a week in each city. Imagine 20 wide-eyed American kids racing through the Amsterdam canals, shouting, “Look at that!” while counselors chased us, begging for decorum. Decorum? At the Eiffel Tower? Not a chance.

Fast-forward to last August: I was slow-barging through Burgundy with European Waterways, soaking in vineyards, villages, and the sweet rhythm of river life. (Hear Derek Banks, Founder of European Waterways take you on a journey in our podcast that includes Europe and Britain.)

Somewhere between wine tastings and towpaths, I decided I want a little place in France… or maybe Italy. My husband has raised an eyebrow or two, but dreams are stubborn — and this one is alive and well.

I’ve started some research on European property buying and will report back to you. I start today in our usual Travel Tuesday sections:

I made it! I’ve been invited for a trial sail on Cunard Lines as a speaker — I’m walking on a cloud. Who says you can’t start something new after 75? It feels perfect. New motto: You’re never too old to be who you could have been! By the way, if you like cruising, we have great bargains on CruisesIt.

Culture Vulturing Around the World

Visit Europe’s REAL “Capitals”
Since 1985, the European Union has been awarding special “Capital” titles to cities that are doing something bold—creating vibrant cultural scenes, building greener futures, inspiring movement, or reinventing urban life, and more recently offering extraordinary sport and culinary experiences. Cities commit to a full year of events, upgrades, and big-thinking programming that turns them into living, breathing destinations — and frankly, fantastic places for travelers who want more than the usual highlights reel.

Check out places you might want on your radar right now:

Oulu, Finland – European Capital of Culture 2026
Think Arctic creativity meets cutting-edge design. Oulu is planning exhibitions, performances, and community-driven projects that celebrate northern culture and innovation. (RELATED: I took a Helsinki architecture tour-fabulous.)

Trenčín, Slovakia – European Capital of Culture 2026
Expect historic spaces turned into modern cultural venues, music and arts programming, and the kind of authenticity travelers say they crave but rarely find in over-touristed destinations. (RELATED: On a driving tour through Slovakia, we visited Cesky Krumlov a Medieval City)

Chemnitz, Germany – European Capital of Culture 2025
Industrial heritage meets contemporary creativity. The city is reinventing public spaces and spotlighting grassroots culture — think art installations, design events, and community storytelling that connects past and future. (RELATED: I recently visited Berlin, must see Jewish Museum)

Nova Gorica, Slovenia / Gorizia, Italy – European Capital of Culture 2025
Blends Italian and Slovenian traditions in ways you won’t find anywhere else. (RELATED: I love the opera house in Slovenia)

Valencia, Spain – European Green Capital 2024 (still very relevant for travelers)
Bike lanes, green spaces, sustainable dining, and a citywide commitment to livability. Even two years after Valencia’s 2024 official year, the infrastructure and eco-focused elements continue to shape a perfect travel experience.

Naples, Italy – European Capital of Sport Programming Initiatives
Beyond pizza and Pompeii, Naples is embracing active travel through sporting events, outdoor programming, and wellness experiences, all layered into its already vibrant cultural life. (RELATED: Near Via 𝑺𝒂𝒏 𝑮𝒓𝒆𝒈𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒐 𝑨𝒓𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒐 look for artist Annalisa Tannoia booths, whimsical work.)

Luxury Travel for Less

The Other Europe

Bulgaria—Where Europe Loves You Back

I’ve been traveling through Eastern Europe since 1974, back when Bulgaria required tourist to be sanctioned by Soviet-owned Intourist, a watch dog if I ever saw one.

Fast forward to now and—hello!—the country looks like someone spilled a rainbow and then added wine bars, pedestrian streets, and museums that are true luxury for less.

Bulgaria is one of Europe’s best value-for-money destinations, especially for mature travelers who want culture, comfort, walkability, and a great meal without Michelin-star sticker shock. Whether you arrive by river cruise or on a land adventure, here are highlights I’ve loved:

Aladzha Monastery – Near Varna

Carved directly into a limestone cliff in the 12th century, Aladzha Monastery was home to monks for nearly 600 years. The caves are simple, atmospheric, and deeply peaceful—perfect for travelers who like history without crowds or chaos.

Good to know for older travelers:

  • Short visit, big payoff
  • Mostly flat paths, some stairs
  • Small onsite museum and benches for resting

🎟️ Entrance: very modest (around €2–3)

Balchik Palace & Botanical Gardens

If you think you’ve “seen enough palace gardens,” think again. Balchik Palace sits on cliffs above the Black Sea and delivers knockout views without Versailles-level exhaustion.

Once the summer residence of Romania’s queen, it’s more elegant manor than grand palace—but the gardens steal the show: roses, cacti, water features, and shaded paths made for strolling (not speed walking).

Why mature travelers love it:

  • Benches everywhere
  • Gentle walking paths
  • Cafés with sea views

Burgas – Black Sea Calm Without the Chaos

Often overshadowed by Varna, Burgas is the place you go when you actually want to relax. It’s a city that’s easy to “be” in—less frenetic, more soulful.

The Sea Garden runs along a long, sandy beach with a flat promenade—ideal for sunset walks, café hopping, and people-watching without dodging scooters.

Where to stay (great value):

Where to eat:

  • Happy Bar & Grill – trendy, reliable, great prices
  • Incanto – seafood, wine, Black Sea views (Michelin-style polish without Michelin pain)

Ivanovo Rock-Hewn Churches – UNESCO Wonder

The Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo are officially UNESCO-listed and visually stunning, with medieval frescoes carved into cliffs overlooking the Rusenski Lom River.

Important honesty for older travelers:

  • Some uphill walking and steps
  • Worth it if you’re steady on your feet
  • Go early, go slow

Plovdiv – Bulgaria’s Cultural Crown Jewel

Named European Capital of Culture (2019), Plovdiv is possibly Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city—and somehow still cool without trying.

It’s ancient without being precious, lively without being loud, and packed with cafés, galleries, and pedestrian streets that make wandering a joy.

Roman Theatre of Philippopolis

The Roman Theatre of Philippopolis is spectacular, affordable (around €3), and wonderfully uncrowded—especially off-season. You can walk the steps, sit on the stage, and actually hear yourself think.

Plovdiv Old Town

Cobblestones, Bulgarian Revival houses, shady lanes, and chic restaurants tucked into history. The Old Town is large, walkable, and filled with places to pause—my favorite travel luxury.

Where to stay (smart value):

Where to eat:

  • Pavaj – modern Bulgarian, relaxed, excellent wine
  • Rahat Tepe – terrace views, sunset magic, gentle prices
