Dear Ageless Traveler,

I’m writing to you as promised, right after my Texas Country Music Cruise disembarkation. I’m in Galveston, having chosen the SeaBreeze Hotel, located on Avenue P 1/2. It is my pick because the reviews highlight how clean, recently renovated, and inexpensive it is.

If you want to go high-end, there are two other standards here—the Grand Galvez and the Tremont—which are the go-to premium hotels in Galveston. Even those are only in the $200-per-day range. In general, Galveston is a bargain, off season. Take one good look at GetYourGuide, and you’ll see that so many of the adventures here are under $30. I call that “Luxury Travel for Less.”

There’s a great deal to do in Galveston, including historic house museums, boat trips along the Gulf Coast, beaches in the summer, and right now, the Motorcycle Rally Festival featuring free music all over Galveston Island. But more about that in next week’s newsletter.

In our usual sections of this newsletter, I’ll be covering a lot of “How To’s” with my hints and tips that make lifelong travel easy:

  • Ask Adriane: How do I get the most out of a shore excursion?
  • News You Can Use: How to handle Airport delays.
  • Culture Vulture: How to select the best of the new genre of cruise shows in ship theaters.
  • Luxury Travel for Less: How to be an adventurer at any age–ATVs, transparent boats, individual submarines, and zip lines—adventures on a shoestring.

On this week’s podcast, I reprise the Texas Country Music Cruise and invite you to register for the 2026 cruise in October on the Symphony of the Seas. Royal Caribbean.

Cheers,
Adriane

This Week’s Highlights

On Our Podcast

The Texas Country Music Cruise

In this episode, join me on an exciting journey aboard the Texas Country Music Cruise. The podcast explores this themed cruise from Galveston, Texas, to Costa Maya, Cozumel, and Honduras, enjoying the music of top performers like Gary P. Nunn.

Imagine the cultural roller coaster—from the twang of Thom Shepard to the rhythmic Spanish accents of Costa Maya and Cozumel—after reaching the shores of Central America.

In the podcast, I interview Cynthia Sayko, the founder of the cruise, who shares her inspiration behind this innovative concept, and Eric Lennington, the cruise director, who provides insights into what attendees can expect.

Culture Vulturing Around the World

The Surprising New Genre of Cruise Shows in Ship Theaters

Every cruise line—and sometimes even individual ships within a line—has its own performance culture or style. Performance matters for first-time cruisers and for those exploring loyalty programs who may sail the same line for years.

Having cruised for the past 30 years, I can tell you there’s been a revolution in cruise entertainment. Thanks to innovative technology, ships can now stage dazzling productions—beyond the old magician or revue show.

Many Carnival cruises feature glitzy, raucous, party-style shows, while British and European ships tend to offer lectures, classical music, or dance troupes that reflect the itinerary’s culture. For example, South American cruises might feature tango experts. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Burn the Floor offers Broadway-level dance performances. At the same time, other ships now produce original shows with stories, themes, or even celebrity tributes like The Music of Elton John.

Stage technology—featuring revolving platforms, LED lighting, and surround sound—has transformed shipboard entertainment into something spectacular.

Pro tip: Choose a dining time that lets you catch as many performances as possible. There are usually two shows: a 7:30 show and a 10:00 show. Opt for early dining, flexible buffet seating, or “anytime dining” to accommodate show going.

Even casinos vary by cruise line—some British ship casinos are elegant and smoke-free, while casinos on party cruise lines can be lively and smoky, and U.S.-based cruises feature large Vegas-style casinos. So, Culture Vultures, choose your ship as carefully as your destination—the entertainment culture can define your entire voyage.

Luxury Travel for Less

ATVs, Transparent Boats, Individual Submarines, and Zip Lines: Adventures on a Shoestring

If you want adventure without overspending, the Caribbean and Mexico are perfect playgrounds. In Cozumel, for example, you can take an ATV jungle ride for about $65 per person—or $90 for two riders on one vehicle if you prefer to share. You’ll race through lush mangrove trails, stop at secluded beaches, and visit hidden Mayan ruins. No driving license? No problem, you can ride as a passenger and still enjoy the thrill.

If you prefer the sea to the sand, try the helmet diving experience, where you wear a pressurized helmet that lets you walk underwater among coral reefs and tropical fish. This unique excursion costs around $70–$80 and is ideal for travelers who don’t snorkel or scuba dive but still want the “underwater world” experience.

Or, for a futuristic twist, hop aboard a mini personal submarine—small, bubble-like pods that let you descend to coral gardens and glide beside schools of fish without even getting your hair wet! These cost around $120–$150 and are often included in combination reef tours.

Add to that a zip line adventure through jungle canopies for under $50, and you’ve got a week of high-energy fun without high-end prices.

These are just a few of the “Luxury for Less” experiences that make destinations like Mexico and Honduras ideal for Ageless Travelers—full of excitement, accessible to all, and kind to your wallet.
