Dear Ageless Traveler,
Right now I’m living the life of which I always dreamed.
I just learned to juggle the Diablo Stick. I am plotting my day in Cadiz Spain. The people next to me are learning to dance. Where am I? I am sitting on the deck of an ocean liner cruising the Atlantic Ocean. This is the first part of a two month journey that will take me to Uganda to trek to see the gorillas, safari in South Africa and then to New York City. The object of The Ageless Traveler is to assist everyone to travel lifelong. In the next 5 years geroscientists will find ways for us to live to over 100 in good health. What should we do with our time. If travel, adventure and voluntouring are your choices, I can help. For example this week we offer a podcast on Portugal living, second home buying and ultimate travel with the International Living expert on Portugal. Whether for a trip, an extended stay or to own a second home, we have it covered. I will explore Lisbon in our next newsletter for your touristic inspiration. In this week’s recurring features you will find: In Ask Adriane I have a question for you. It is a short poll on what would be our next best steps to make your travel easier. Please send your answers to adrianegberg@gmail.com. In News You Can Use I show you how to get the most out of shore excursions. In this weeks Culture Vulture, discover the Canary Island. In Luxury Travel for Less, I cover cruise ship savings by sharing my favorite secret strategy.

Culture Vulturing Around the World
|

You may not think of culture in the Canary Islands, but they are volcanic hotbeds of art and history.
You are likely to visit Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Las Palmas de La Cruz and Lanzarote. The choices are made easier by the Fred Olsen ferry service which takes you between islands in less than a day, so that you can visit them all during a week. Tenerife boasts plenty of public art and statuary, nightlife and theater including the lauded flamenco dancing.
It boasts San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a UNESCO city, one of the oldest non-walled cities on which the design of Santiago, Chile and other South American cities are based. Its cathedral is Reminiscent of the Alhambra, and one of the most spiritual buildings I have ever entered. Lanzarote is like taking a trip to the moon. Its cultural experience is geological as an erupted volcano covers the land in black sand, red earth, and white likens. Lanzarote has a unique wine culture. The wind is so strong that each delicate vine is protected by its own lava wall. In such an extraordinary natural setting, one man, the artist César Manrique, adviser to the policy makers, designed the architecture of the island to attract tourism, making the entire island a work of art. The roads are created to give you the best geological views of the extraordinary volcanic formations. The homes remain white with green shutters built in the farmhouse style of the founders of the island. The museum is an award-winning art museum. The food remains barbecue, inspired by the fires that still burns below the surface of the earth. Art can be found everywhere in its most sophisticated creation. Gran Canaria, one of the larger islands, is a fabulous place for whale and dolphin boat trips, but also a cultural center. The Canaries are also excellent for hiking, rugged adventure, volcano trekking, swimming, snorkeling and days on the beach. But for the culture vulture it is a surprising revelation.

If you read my free e-book, Luxury Travel For Less, which you can download from this newsletter, you know that I count my pennies when I travel. One of my tricks is to book cruises on ships that do not cater to US style travel. For example many British and European cruise lines are lower in cost and offer more exotic itineraries. Of course, everything depends on the currency exchange between the pound, euro and US dollar. When the dollar is strong, there is no better bargain than a cruise that charges in a foreign currency. In addition to the currency exchange benefit, you’ll find other savings. Drinks are usually a bit cheaper…8 dollars for a Prosecco instead of 10 or even 12. The spa treatments are usually 10% to 20% less for similar services. Sometimes tips are included in the entire trip saving $40 per day that way. Even the shops can be less expensive. You’ll find examples of these bargains on our ebook, free below.
